The district of La Bastille is famous both for its history but also for its opera.
The Column of July dominates the Place Bastille. It marks the site of the Bastille prison was stormed by a mob in 1789 at the beginning of the French Revolution. In the subway station beneath the square, you can still see the stones that were the foundations of the Bastille.
The construction of the Opera has also marked the neighborhood.
In 1983, the architect Carlos Ott has been selected from 750 participants in the competition to design a new opera house located in the district of the Bastille. The project envisioned by President François Mitterrand was not without controversy.
However, the architect has preserved the configuration of the district, while imposing architecture with geometric shapes and a façade composed of glass and gray marble.
The auditorium consists of 2 700 seats has been designed for a social purpose: the construction of the Opera Bastille in the east of the capital is symbolic (away from the uptown elite) as is the date of inauguration July 14, 1989.
